Great news this week concerning the 2013 US Senior Open Golf Championship and the fact it will be played at Omaha Country Club.  It's another major sporting event for Omaha.

I spoke with Jim Vernon, President of the United States Golf Association and he tells me the USGA committee is very impressed with the facilities at OCC and the excellent track record that Omaha has with major sporting events.  It's five years away but the selection adds immediate punch in the efforts to attract other significant events to the metro area.

Vernon also passed along some other interesting news while addressing a fund-raising dinner for the Nebraska Golf Foundation.  The USGA will implement new restrictions on golf clubs in 2010 for tour professionals.  It's a scaling back on some of the new technology that has made the PGA tour a "long ball" game instead of the emphasis on "shot making."

Vernon says when those changes are made, the set up of courses for tour events will feature more reasonable pin placements because the premium will be on player skills with the scaled back clubs.

Don't worry, you won't have to dump your clubs to conform with the new rules.  Vernon says they will be eased into effect on the amateur level over a ten-year period.

Great things are planned for the game and importantly for all of us, Omaha.

Knicely Done!
