Scott Gutshewski grew up in Ralston and he drives an RV from city to city every week trying to earn a living. So far this year he's made more than $250,000 so it would seem he's been successful. Not exactly. Gutschewski is a PGA touring pro and he's part of an elite group. Only 195 professionals are on tour and there are several thousand worldwide who have game but don't measure up. This is Gutschewski's second full year on the PGA tour and with the season winding down it's crunch time. He needs to make about $500,000 in the final two tournaments to keep his playing card. That means he needs a win or several very high finishes. I've had the pleasure to play with Scott and witness first hand his massive drives. He ranks 5th on tour in driving this year with a 307 yard average. By comparison Tiger Woods is 14th with a 302 average. What separates the two is the fact Tiger follows his drives with a shot on the green much more often that Scott. Consequently Tiger putts for more birdies and at the same time makes more putts. I caught up with Gutschewski who goes by the nickname "Gootch" when he was in town last month preparing for the season stretch run. He's a good putter and found something earlier this year that works. A head cover from Hawaii. You can watch the video clip and learn more about it and also just how crowded that RV is when he loads up his clubs for the next tour stop. Here's hoping "Gootch" has a strong finish. The former Husker is a great ambassador for our State. |
