So yes, I'm a Georgia girl and we just don't have storms there like the one that hit Omaha Friday night. Georgia gets thunderstorms and tornadoes and even the occasional hurricane, but not a hurricane hiding inside a thunderstorm. (disclaimer: that's my description of it, not our weather department, and I'm sure there's nothing scientific about my observation)
As I've driven around town in the days following 6/27, I've been completely surprised and stunned at the damage I've seen. But the most amazing, how resilient most people are. I've interviewed people with so much damage to their home, yet they're cracking jokes. One family even had a "free firewood" sign posted on the gigantic tree that fell on their home. And so many neighbors our helping neighbors. It is truly times like these we see how good the human spirit can be.
I came out lucky in this storm. I live not far from an area in NW Omaha that was hit very hard, yet my home had no damage. My landscaping didn't come out of it as well, but that can be replaced. I also now have an artful polka-dotted fence, thanks to the hail. I thought I'd share just a few pictures of my measly damage.
My poor hostas, yet not far away, no harm.
My poor fence, but at least it's standing.
