Every year, one of the first weeks in March is always Read Across America Week. It's a time when the importance of reading is put on display across the nation. (Of course I hope this is also done every day.) The week always includes guest readers, and that's where I come in along with many others from our station and the metro area.
This year I was invited to read to the students at several metro area schools. I always love going into the classrooms to visit with the students and hear what their thoughts are that day. It's great to sit there and read to a classroom full of eager faces, all listening and laughing as I read. And I hope these children realize how important reading is and how blessed they are that they live in a society where they get the chance to learn to read. The more they read now, the better prepared they will be for the future. I always had my nose buried in a book when I was a child, and I still love to curl up with a good book today.
I also love the question part of the reading event. This is when the kids get to ask me all about what I do and what it took to get to where I am. There are always the normal questions like, "what's my favorite story I've covered?" or "do I get to interview famous people?" Those area great, but my favorite question this year was "how big is the actual machine the makes up our sports machine?"
The first school I visited, on March 5th, was Blumfield Elementary. There I got to read to the 6th graders in Mrs. Fugleberg and Mr. Cain's classes:

On March 6th, I stopped by Mr. Mehlin's 4th grade class at Black Elk Elementary School.
After that school, I headed next to Skyline Elementary in Elkhorn. There I read to the second grade students in Mrs. Scott and Mrs. Schutte's classes. Then I headed over to the third grade students in Mrs. Simpson, Mrs. Thomsen and Mrs. Martinec's classes. It was so great to meet all the students:
