Wham, Bang, Boom!

You might have been driving down Kanesville Boulevard in Council Bluffs Monday, March 10th, around 5:45 p.m.  And if you were, you might have noticed the wrecked Channel 6 vehicle sitting in the middle of the road.  And if you did, you might have noticed me.  Yep, my photographer Roger Hamer and I were the unfortunate victims of a rear-end accident Monday.  One minute we're stopped in traffic, the next minute, Wham!, someone runs right into the back of our Jeep.  What a surprise!

Of course we cover accidents frequently in our business, so it's not unusual for me to be around one.  But it's been many years since I've actually been involved in one.  I forgot how much it can rattle you.  Of course the most important thing is (aside from a little soreness) no one was hurt in the accident.  We were even pushed into a car in front of us that had a two year old inside, but his mom told us the little guy was not bothered a bit.  Thank goodness!

I always try to take life instances like this and apply them the next time I'm out at a similar scene.  When we're covering something traumatic, it's always good if we have some idea of what that person is going through so we can act accordingly.  Of course I always hope every reporter shows the highest level of compassion and understanding they can.  I also know this one accident won't give me a feel for what someone goes through in a critical or even fatal accident, but it's a memory in the back of my head.

The best thing of course is that God decided all of us involved in this accident should stick around for at least another day.
