I have to admit, the first 2 days of March Madness are absolutely the hardest for me to concentrate! I just want to disconnect the phone, call in sick, and watch every game. After all, where else can you catch a freshman, Beasley, playing that is one of the best players in the country--and makes it all look so easy. Or Hansbrough's (Psycho T's) moment after sinking the shot that put North Carolina over Clemson on the board. (I think I will try that dance if I win Bracketology.) And why is it that it all depends on which team peaks at tourney time?
I love basketball. Being a KU grad and former student producer for the Roy Williams show, I loved the tradition of going to Allen Fieldhouse, crowding next to students with their face painted, and hearing the chant echo through the old arena. Now that I am married to a Nebraska grad--and die hard fan, I can say, Memorial Stadium is the only experience that rivals it--and yes, I admit, TOPS it on game day.
Every year I fill out my bracket and share my pick with sports radio fans. Every year I pick Kansas. Every year I'm crushed (publicly, no less)
This year, sitting next to Knicely, Flowers, & Webbs, they had plenty to give me a hard time about! It's all in good fun---I came into work to find a KU hat and t-shirt Webbs picked up. I know it was very hard for him to buy something that isn't red! I wore it to the first game. We won. I'll be wearing it to every game until it all comes to an end.
As I'm writing this, KU has made it to the sweet 16---a pretty good year for the many Big 12 teams, no less!!! But here's why I think it's KU's year. It's 20 years since the 1988 Championship. Danny Manning was on that team, he now coaches this team. The tourney win for KU began in Lincoln. This year, also in Nebraska--Omaha. Plus, the team plays unselfishly. There are no stars, just good team basketball.
That's my reasoning, my hope, and I'm sticking to it.
By the way, I"ve gone from #1.........to #8.
Here's hoping you're enjoying the madness...or at least beating your co-workers in Bracketology.
