Unless you've been living under a rock or have confined yourself to your air conditioned home, you know how hot it's been this past week in Omaha!  One of the downsides of being in the Midwest is that not only do we get high temperatures in the nineties but also major humidity surging in from the Gulf of Mexico.  To say the least, it hasn't felt too pleasant outside.

The heat in the Central US has been the big national weather story as well.  I've heard some great ideas about staying cool, such as the Hydrant Parties we feature in the Summer Livingcast on Daybreak.  Other great ideas: seeking refuge in air conditioned malls, movie theaters and bowling alleys, or of course visiting your town pools or local lakes.

So what have you been doing to beat the heat?  We've only just begun the summer season, I'm sure there will be more heat waves on the horizon and we all need plenty of ideas to keep cool.

Arizonians know that swamp coolers are the best, cheapest and most efficient way to stay cool in the heat. Unfortunately, swamp coolers work only in hot, dry climates like in the southwest. Its a shame Nebraska is so humid..as well as hot in the summer. *Sigh*

I keep 5 fans running 24/7 to move air in and out of my house. I also keep a cool wash cloth handy throughout the day to cool myself (very refreshing on the face and neck). Of course drinking a lot of water and eating cold, light meals helps too. Don't forget to have a few fruitbars or popsicles on hand!!! They are a must : )
