Driving down Farnam Street, I noticed the crews at Midtown Crossing were busy putting up holiday lights on all the trees in their green space. In a couple days, the Salvation Army will officially begin its Tree of Lights campaign with the public unveiling the metal tree at 90th and Dodge -- and we're already seeing some of the bell ringers at store entrances. For charities, each year seems to be getting harder and harder to raise money. It's a Catch 22 really. More and more people are needing the services of charity because of the economy. But the charites have less money work with because more and more people are struggling at home with the checkbook. With the success of the Haiti relief effort through texting, the Salvation Army has unveiled a different way to donate. To give, you only need to text the word "Good" to 27722 to make a $10 donation. I doubt technology will ever replace the bell ringers though. |
