Music is in my veins. While I've never been much of a musician, much of my daily life is filled with listening to tunes.
I work better with music. I studied better with music in college. I sleep better with it playing in the background.
My wife understands this -- and many of my favorities she has grown to love...I think ;) In the same breath, she always points out that my tastes are a little off the beaten path.
That's why last night I found it hard to believe that the band I was rooting for -- Arcade Fire -- actually won the "Album of the Year" Grammy. They looked as surprised as I was.
I decided to look back at some years to show the bank I was hoping for and who ended up winning.
The following are my choices from those years, followed by the actual winner that year. You can tell, there was a lot of disappointment over the years ;)
2009, Dave Matthews Band -- Taylor Swift
2008, Radiohead -- Allison Krauss/Robert Plant
2006, Red Hot Chili Peppers -- Dixie Chicks
2004, Green Day -- Ray Charles
2003, The White Stripes -- Ray Charles
2000, Radiohead -- Steely Dan
1996, Smashing Pumpkins -- Celine Dion
1995, Pearl Jam -- Alanis Morissette
1993, R.E.M. -- Whitney Houston
1991, R.E.M. -- Natalie Cole
1989, Fine Young Cannibals -- Bonnie Raitt
1985, Dire Straits -- Phil Collins
1984, Prince -- Lionel Richie
1983, The Police -- Michael Jackson
It's not that I didn't like the winners -- in many cases, I own the albums. It's just that if given a choice, I usually err on the side of the one not as popular.
