We had parent/teacher conferences the other day.

Usually my son listens in as the teacher goes over the report card and this evening wasn't any different.

As his 2nd grade teacher told my wife and me about his first quarter work, she ran through the terminology.

The"M" means he mastered the task.

"P" is progressing.

"N/A" is not applicable she explained.  "We haven't covered that yet."

As we drove to school the next day, my son told me he was surprised by one thing about his grades.

Of course, this perked my ears.  The teacher didn't say he was having trouble.  I was concerned.

He told me he wondered why he was NOT AVERAGE in so many subjects.

He thought that's what the "N/A" meant!

Poor kid.
