We didn't get video of this moment but we heard it as we finished up recording some of what appeared to be an impromptu candlelight vigil outside Millard South's main entrance last night. It's 10pm and as close as you could get to the crime scene without going around the police tape is where students gathered. After more than an half-hour of silence, three students gathered in the center of what had grown from a small circle of 12 to an giant, layered oval of more than 200. They read Psalm 30 and then told the crowd, "We are still Patriots. We stand together and support each other." After that, the students chanted the school cheer and blared Christian music from a car stereo. It's 11pm now and as we walked to the live truck to leave, we stopped to get video of a student vehicle where the driver had written messages on the windows honoring Assistant Principal Vicki Kaspar. She had died two hours earlier. We faintly heard students singing Happy Birthday. The administrator was to turn 59 the next day. |
