Last night, I left with what I thought was plenty of time to make it to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra at the Mid-America Center. Little did I know the traffic would be backed up for what seemed like forever. Since I was working, I wasn't going for the show for the pure entertainment value -- but to help introduce the band and the Salvation Army at the beginning of the concert. TSO donated close to $6,000 to the Salvation Army as a way of giving back to an area which has embraced their act for years. (They often give away a portion of the ticket prices to a charitable organization in each city they play.) Trouble is -- I never made it to the stage in time. A train had blocked the Convention Center road. I didn't know it right away since were stopped back by the interestate exit near Ameristar. I figured it was standard congestion for a big concert. Only when I got closer did I see that a long train was blocking the intersection. I didn't realize that until I got closer and then I just drove way around to the other side. Since I was a couple minutes late, Jerry from 96.1-The Brew handled the announcing duties. You're a lifesaver. It made me wonder, how many other times -- games, shows, concerts -- does the train clog up the interesection? I suspect the city will one day build an overpass to prevent just such a thing. |
