Last night, the OPS School Board honored three men who kept an armed teenager from getting inside a high school. You may remember the story -- last month, police said a 15-year old armed with a short shotgun tucked inside a bag walked up to North High before getting spooked and running away in the parking lot. Investigators later found his locker full of shells and identified him as a gang member. Three men -- the school resource officer, a security guard and a construction worker tracked down the suspect in a matter of moments. Two of the men who attended the meeting (the SRO had to work) told me they shuttered to think what could have happened if the student hadn't been stopped. The superintendent told them he appreciated their efforts at averting the unknown and that they had passed a 'common sense litmus test' on that February day -- especially under the backdrop of growing national violence and the "lack of a political will [among others] to do something about it." The board asked the men to attend the meeting but didn't tell them why. Needless to say they were surprised and humbled when given a plaque honoring their actions. Brian
