A few days ago, I did a story on two teenage girls from Springfield, Neb., who had recently celebrated their 16th birthday.  They invited their friends and family to hear a country band on a Saturday night.  The one caveat: any presents wouldn't go to them but to Children's Hospital and Medical Center.

Taylor Marie Smith (pictured below) came up with the idea when, as a patient, she realized there was a shortage of pre-teen and teen games and DVDs at the hospital.

Her friend, Taylor Marie Schorsch, agreed with the idea.

Their friends brought 85 gifts to the party and the two raised $220 in the raffles.  That money will go to the foundation to buy more things for sick, older kids.  Staff members say that most of the stuffed animals and games that come to the hospital are targeted at adolescents so this donation really fills a need.

I was pleased they allowed us to tell their story.  I thought it was a wonderful gesture by an age group who isn't expected to be that mature yet.  I think many people are hoping what these two teens did for their birthday becomes contagious.
