How is it an $82-million, 122,000 square foot building doesn't have a fence around it during construction to keep out the riff-raff? That's the story going around today at the ribbon-cutting and dedication of the The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center. Normally when there's such a big project, we see fences go up. They're all over the Downtown Baseball Stadium site and Midtown Crossing. But in South Omaha, there was no fence during construction. Apparently, Kiewit, the builder, even wondered about it. As it turns out, the Kroc Center didn't have any problems with graffiti, vandalism, theft or anything else according to a spokeswoman. The neighborhood was the security. There were so many neighbors keeping an eye on a project that had become a source of pride for the area, a fence wasn't necessary. To that, it speaks volumes. Brian
