My son hates going to the dentist and this week's trip was a real test. We had already put off getting X-rays last check-up. We knew he had to overcome the fear this time. (Remember, this is a kid who doesn't mind the shots at the doctor's office sometimes.) So we practiced. He put little pieces of cardboard in his mouth to simulate the experience. It was game while we were at home. It seemed like torture when we got to the dentist. The staff and I tried every possible angle to relax him and soften the discomfort. At first, nothing worked. Finally we got him to close his mouth enough and freeze. Of course after he took one, he began to take off the lead vest and prepare to move on. He wasn't thrilled to find out there were three more pictures to take. This room doesn't have a door and one of the workers appeared to show a younger child how the X-ray worked and how it wasn't so bad. I wonder what the little girl thought once she saw my son there crying and begging to stop. And just when we thought the worst was over, he went in for the teeth cleaning. Brian |
