The other day when a water main broke on 114th street I ran into three young girls who were curious about where all the water was coming from.

One of them had a frightening look in her eye for good reason.  She was scared of a repeat.

Last June, her home was not in Omaha but Cedar Rapids, Iowa, her friends told me.

She was there when 10 square miles of downtown were devastated by record floods.  Thousands of people lost their homes.

Friends of the little girl on 114th street seemed to calm her fears by walking to the buckled road to see the damage and to prove she was safe here.
