While talking with some of those who had stood in line waiting for a same-sex marriage license in Pottawattamie County Monday, I couldn't help but laugh at one of the statistics. 31 couples applied for marriage licenses in Council Bluffs. 29 of them were same-sex couples. Of course, that means 2 couples were there for the traditional marriage license. While the line moved fairly fast and I don't know if the two couples ever got caught up in it (they may have come later in the day) -- I couldn't help think about what might be going through their heads. Many of the same-sex couples saw the humor in it too. Imagine what the conversation could have been like: 'Why are all the news crews here honey?' 'It sure is busy on a Monday.' 'I wish I would have watched the news more closely before deciding on getting a marriage license today.' 'I didn't know so many people got married in Council Bluffs every day.' and my favorite possibility would be from one of the straight couples' friends: 'Hey, I saw you on the news getting a marriage license the other night That was you, wasn't it?' It's an aside that came up a few times among the crowd of same-sex couples. So did one other thing as they jokingly told me, 'Now we can get divorced too!' Brian Mastre |
