Every few months, I usually talk to students who are considering a career in Broadcasting. I always enjoy it. I try to show one of my first reports from Mason City, Iowa (many of the first ones are horrible), and then highlight some of the award-winning stories. It gives the students the idea that progress can be made.
While that comes easily to me, the other day was a bit more of a teaching challenge. One of the teachers at Braxton's pre-school had a baby and so parents help fill-in while she's away. My turn came up on Thursday. I had a great time hanging out and being silly.
My role was to hang out in the library and help the teacher. They've extinguished the alphabet and are now on to numbers. '0' was today's feature. After a couple of 'Who are you?' from the children, they accepted me. I'll admit, the 3 and 4-year-olds knew the songs and routines better than I did. But anyone can play, right? My son gave me a few looks implying: 'Why is my Dad playing and reading to someone else?' Other than that, he was excited to have me around. Now I know what his answer means when I ask him, "What happened in school today?" His usual reply: 'Nothing. We played." He couldn't fool me this time around.
So what was the biggest highlight for the boys? The bathroom breaks. Usually, they head for the Ladies Room, but with me, a guy, we used the Mens Room. For many, that room at the school was new to them. They acted like it was Christmas morning by the tree...and were amazed at what was in there. Especially when they saw the urinal. I'm just glad none of them sat in it!
