This past weekend the Easter Seals organization asked me to participate in their Kickball Tournament fundraiser. They asked people from each team to wear or use something that would simulate real disabilities -- a way of educating everyone of the challenges so many people face. The options involved blurry goggles, noise-cancelling headphones and a wheelchair. I chose the goggles and did not do well. Below is a picture of my vision impairment at AllPlay.
I did not score a run but Olivia Hope (pictured below) did. She has spina bifida. Her family tells me she gets around better than others in a similar condition. They chalked that up to her determination.
Later, I talked with City Council President Garry Gernandt who also participated. His team kept winning so he was able to experiment with each item. He said, by far, the most challenging one was the wheelchair. No doubt, he said, it offered a newfound appreciation for what most of us consider routine living. |
