My son just wrapped up his first day of kindergarten today. This morning, my wife and I took him to school. As the 19-or-so students gathered around the teacher holding up a big sign with her name on it in the lawn outside the school, it seemed like pandemonium. Many of the kids were wide-eyed -- trying to soak in the atmosphere. You could see the uncertainty. The unknowns were so great for those who are 5-and-6. One girl in his class was being consoled by another teacher. At this point, I hear my son ask the other teacher a question. "Are we going to do math today?" he said. The teacher replied with a diplomatic answer, "We're going to get from Point A to Point B today." Tonight, I asked my son how the rest of his day went. He told me what he had for lunch, how a classmate got into trouble and that he hated rest time. I pried for more details. He sighed and said, "Mom already asked all the questions!" |
