Spectators found it hard to ignore the elephants in Omaha's Old Market around lunchtime on a Wednesday in June.

Adrianne Agulla was on her lunch break and watched the four-legged display. “It was definitely a sight to see, something you don’t see every day down here.”

Eleven female elephants and countless horses were led from the Durham Western Heritage Museum down 10th Street to the Qwest Center. The animals are part of the Ringling Brothers and Barnam & Bailey Circus.

Agulla’s son Evan was too excited for words. “They (the elephants) were holding onto each other’s tails!”

The animals arrived in Omaha by train Wednesday morning and it just so happens the only way to transport them to the Qwest Center was by using 10th Street.

Libby Morris is an animal handler with the circus and says the animals don’t seem to mind the walk, which was a little under a mile. “To them it’s just like taking a walk in the park or down the street. It’s nice, it’s peaceful and it’s a lot of fun. It’s a nice treat for people to be able to see them on their lunch time, something different."

The Ringling Brothers and Barnam & Bailey Circus “Zing Zang Zoom” show runs Friday through Sunday at the Qwest Center. Circus-goers can arrive up to an hour early to meet the performers, talk with animal handlers and get a closer look at the animals.
