Summer is just about here, let the road trips begin! Before you head out have a mechanic give your vehicle a once over to make sure it's road worthy. Once the vehicle is ready, here are a few tips to use along the way.

Check the Department of Roads Web site before you leave to find out where road construction is happening along the way. You might be able to plan an alternate route to avoid some of the construction headaches.

Also, there are a lot of Web sites like Road Trip America and they have what seems like an endless supply of great information. Check them out before and during your trip and your vacation should go a little smoother.

Try packing a picnic lunch for a change. Getting fast food all the time can be expensive and you might be surprised to find some beautiful little parks in the small towns along the way.

Taking a nap while riding can be a challenge, but putting your head over to the side can be unsafe. Newer vehicles have airbags that come out right where you head would be. Your best bet is to try to be as upright as possible and use a pillow that wraps around your neck to support your head.

Sometimes we get in too big of a hurry to get to our destination and get totally stressed out by the time we arrive. Allow some time to pull off and spend and hour or two at some roadside attractions and you can avoid looking like Clark Griswold when he finally got to Wally World.

Keeping the kids organized can be tough, but there are products that can help. Organizers that store things such as coloring books, markers CDs, DVDs and even video games can be placed between the seats and will keep things well within reach for the kids.

Flashlights come in small sizes and some have bendable legs so that the light can be hooked to items such as a coat hook above your child’s seat. This gives them their own private light source for those nighttime drives, plus they can take them along when they get to the hotel or campsite.

In the old days we would play games like roadside bingo or the license plate game, but in the age of smart phones and tablets, kids aren’t as likely to play along. But guess what? There are apps out there for those sorts of games and they are a blast. You’d be surprised to see how much fun the kids have playing our old games on the new smart phones and hey, at least it gets them to look out the windows.
