Revamp Your Headlights

If you have a dull headlight, you might think that the only solution is to replace it. But there are some repair kits on the market that can make them look a lot better for a lot less money.

The kits are made by several different manufacturers and they include most everything that you need, other than a cordless drill.

To get started, you clean off the light and mask off the surrounding areas. Then you attach the sanding pad from the kit to a cordless drill and start sanding the front of the headlight to remove the scratches and yellow buildup on the lens.

You progressively use finer and finer sandpaper until the face of the lens is smooth. Then you use a special type of wet sandpaper that really prepares the lens for polishing. After you are done wet sanding, you can wipe off the lens. It should be smooth with a white haze over the entire face of the lens.

This is when you can start to polish the lens and hopefully see some big time improvements. You attach the kit’s foam pad to the drill and add a little polishing compound to the pad. Then use the drill and pad to polish the lens until it is as clear as possible. Once you are at that point you can remove the masking tape and clean up the area around the light. The lens should be much clearer now.

Another type of product for this type of repair is not really a do-it-yourself project. It is usually a repair that is done at a body shop. The process is similar to the other kits, where you mask off the area and sand down the lens.

But that’s where things are different with this kit. A clear coat product is sprayed over the face of the light, which is then cured with a UV light for a few minutes. Once the product is cured, the light should look pretty close to brand new once again.

Depending on if you want to try to do it yourself or have a shop do it for you, there are some really good options out there to clean up your headlights.

After all, you don’t want anyone out on the road thinking that you are not too bright, do you?
