It’s time to winterize your car. Here are the top 6 things to check before the cold weather hits:
#6. Wiper blades. These are really inexpensive, but they are very important. They should be replaced once a year to keep the windshield as clear as possible.
#5. Lubricants. The lubricants are very important to check. If the oil is too thick, it’s harder for the engine to turn over on a cold day. And if the transmission fluid is not in good shape, you might burn up your transmission when you get stuck on a slippery hill this winter.
#4 Check your belts. Most cars just have one belt that drives all of the different things like the water pump, alternator, and power steering pump. If it breaks, you are stuck! Make sure that you replace it as scheduled.
#3. Tires. The tires need to have plenty of tread, and be in good shape overall. Remember last year when you were stuck in the snow? Good tires make a big difference in those situations.
#2. Antifreeze. Your antifreeze not only keeps the engine from freezing and overheating, but it also has chemicals in it to keep corrosion down inside the system. Even though it looks good, it could be worn out, and time to replace it.
#1. Battery. The battery and charging system are also very important. Many times the battery cables can get really corroded, and that makes it much harder for power to flow through the electrical system. You also need to make sure that the battery is still in good shape, because many batteries just last 3 or 4 years these days.
These are the top 6 things to check, but always remember to get your vehicle thoroughly inspected before winter.
